                                                                                             and more...

Welcome to the 24th ICU Tournament 2015. It’s my great honour to be the Chief Adjudicator of this tournament. This tournament has the longest history across the Northeast Asia, and the only international tournament in Japan.

And this year, this tournament takes further challenges.

From the first step, We openly call for adjudication core and welcome 4 great members of adjudication core. Andy from Scotland, Jesus from the Philippines, Prarthana from Singapore, and Rafiq from Malaysia. All of them are giants of debate and adjudication, and also passionate to dedicate for this tournament. I never feel much pleasure than working with them.

And the next step, we invited honourable adjudicators across the Asia. They achieved prestigious results in numerous numbers of tournament. I guarantee debates or adjudicators can acquire further opportunity to learn from them.

Then finally, it’s your turn to take challenges on this tournament. More than 60 teams gather then debate and adjudicate in 3 days. Let’s make your own goals and fight for it.

I hope every debaters, adjudicators enjoy the debate, and find something blight to you.

Hello ICUT participants!

At many points during this tournament, you are going to feel frustrated, want to harm your teammate, adjudicator or both and you are going to question why you even decided to be here. Just remember at those times that a tournament is so much more than just the debates. It's about the things you learn, the friends you make and the ones you reconnect with, the jokes you'll be telling years from now and, if you're like me, trying the new food that comes with the territory! So enjoy yourselves to the fullest and please don't injure your poor teammates!

Jesus was born and raised with the concept of "Filipino time", which according to urban dictionary means things get done whenever they're done. If you set a dinner meeting at 6:00pm, the meeting starts the time when everyone arrives - which can be as early as 7:00pm or as late as 9:00pm. Jesus usually is the first one to arrive at meetings, bringing his iPad and playing games to while away the time.

Mixing "Filipino time" and debate tournaments together, even with the most efficient tabbing and pool of runners, you will get a delayed tournament.

Organizers set call times 1-2 hours before the actual time they want the debaters to be there just so the tournament will run on time. Other schemes include having working lunch during prep times!

Having heard of the legendary phenomenon of tournaments running on time (or earlier!) in Japan, Jesus wasted no time applying to become DCA of ICUT to see this thing called "Japanese time" applied to a debate tournament.

Jesus has been to Japan in December, 2014 and was baffled how trains could arrive 1 minute before the designated time its arrival was announced to be. Jesus expects to be more baffled and have lots of spare time in ICUT... so that he'll have more time to go to Akihabara. *wink*

Winner, World University Debating Championships (WUDC), 1997 (Stellenbosch, South Africa) 3-time Scottish national finalist, John Smith Mace (UK and Ireland national championships)Winner / finalist at many UK and Ireland IV competitionsChief Adjudicator, WUDC 2001 (Glasgow, Scotland); UCTI Debate Open 2010 (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)

Twenty years from now - take it from an old man like me - you won't remember the topics you debated; you won't remember what side you were on; you won't even, believe it or not, remember if you won or lost.

What you'll remember is the people, the places, the parties and the drunken kisses (and if there aren't many of them, you'll just make those bits up, like I do.) So enjoy your time in debate to the max, win or lose, and make as many memories as you can!
